has based its philosophy from the very beginning on Continuous Improvement Strategy and has made itself strongly committed to achieve that through the course of its evolution into an international research team in the field of renewable energy and biomass utilization.

In light of that, we are pleased to inform the BRTeam members that a number of improvements and changes have been made during the last 6-month period in order to bring BRTeam to a whole new level internationally.

The first improvements achieved has been the considerable development of BRTeam`s Energy Crops Genetic Engineering Group.

The group has been led by Assoc. Professor Masoud Tohidfar since 2010 and has been actively engaged in Microalgae Genetic Engineering for enhanced lipid production. During the Big BRTeam Meeting (Spring- Summer, 2013), two new research group proposals were presented which ultimately led to a number of significant changes in the structure of the group:

1- Microbiology for Biofuel by Assoc. Professor Javad Hamedi; Vice President of the Research, Technology and Microbial Products Center of Tehran University (also Head of BRTeam`s Biodiesel Production Site at Tehran University).

2- Synthetic Biology by Assist. Professor Hamid Memary (Chamran University of Ahvaz; also, Estonian University of Life Sciences).

Having considered the proposals, BRTeam`s Group leaders unanimously approved the establishment of the new groups. However, through the course of further negotiations led by BRTeam`s Research Manager; Assist. Professor Mehrshad Zeinolabedini, with the three group leaders, it was agreed upon to establish a new group entitled “Biological Engineering” with 3 sub-groups i.e. Energy Crops Genetic Engineering, Microbiology for Biofuel, and Synthetic Biology.

So, the ultimate structure of the new group and its subgroups is as follows:

We are proud to inform BRTeam members that BRTeam`s extension branch, EGE, in collaboration with SGP/GEF/UNDP and Talented Students Organization of Iran (SAMPAD), will be organizing a hands-on workshop entitled “Management of Waste Cooking Oil and Biodiesel Production” on 22nd and 23rd October 2013 at the venue of Alameh Heli 2 High School.

The event will be covered by Media Sponsor of EGE, Danesh National Radio Channel. The event will be attended by a number of BRTeam Members, VIP guests including top-ranking UN officials in Iran and the whole ceremony will be documented by IRIB. The workshop has been efficiently co-organized exclusively for a group of 150 selected talented students by BRTeam`s Internal Affairs Manager; Eng. Nazanin Saberi, Eng. Mahdi Alizadeh; Allameh Helli 2 High School`s Representative and Radio Danesh Representative; Eng. Siyavash Aghdaei.

The agenda includes a welcome speech by the representative of the Talented Students Organization of Iran and will be followed by two lectures by BRTeam Leader; Dr. Meisam Tabatabaei and BRTeam`s Bio/reactor Technology Group Leader; Dr. Ali Zonouzi and the talented students will be briefed on the principles of biofuel production and in particular Biodiesel Production from Waste Cooking Oil (WCO).

The students will then begin to fry potato chips and lunch will be served afterwards. The WCO generated will then be used for biodiesel production using two reactors of different sizes; Laboratory-scale Biodiesel Processor and BD-Pro 50L (with 5 and 50 liters of capacity, respectively). Both reactors have been designed and fabricated by BRTeam`s Bio/reactor Technology Group. BD-Pro 50L is an EGE/SGP patented technology.

The produced biodiesel-glycerine will then be decanted and raw biodiesel will be washed. The closing ceremony include two speeches by UN officials and finally the final biodiesel product will be pumped into the school minibus in presence of VIP guests including UN officials. The event will be officially closed by the departure of the students in the biodiesel-powered school minibus.

It is very hopeful that this event marks start of countrywide application of biodiesel as an additive for petroleum-diesel and that such activities could play a significant role in achieving cleaner environments and healthier nation.
